Statement of LIUNA General President Terry O’Sullivan on the Passing of Former LIUNA Vice President and Director of Minority Advancement George Gudger

The Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) lost a good man and a great labor leader when former LIUNA Vice President and Director of Minority Advancement George Gudger passed away recently. On behalf of the General Executive Board and the half million strong, proud, and united men and women of LIUNA, I extend my deepest sympathies to the Gudger family.

George Gudger was a true Laborer’s Laborer, a warrior of the working class, and a champion of civil and human rights. He was also a happy warrior, always ready to share good jokes, great stories, and encouraging words. His warmth and friendship brightened the darkest days, and lifted the spirits of all who knew him.

Vice President Gudger became a member of LIUNA in 1966, when he helped to organize Local 1137 in Augusta, Georgia. He rose through the ranks, serving LIUNA, its members, and their families in many positions, including Local Union Representative, Local Union Business Manager, International Vice President, Regional Director, and Director of Minority Advancement. He helped establish LIUNA’s African-American, Latino, and Women’s Caucuses. He forged strong relationships between LIUNA and important religious and community organizations, including the A. Philip Randolph Institute and the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists. He also encouraged and mentored many LIUNA leaders, members, and staffers who are currently making important contributions to our great International Union.

Vice President Gudger left our Union, our movement, and our world better than the way that he found them. May his memory serve as an inspiration to us all.
